How To Grow Mung Bean Sprouts

Hello Everyone,

It’s snowstorm on Super Bowl Sunday along the East Coast.

I am preparing for my virtual cooking classes in spring semester. And I am so excited to share a fun activity to everyone who love to cook and enjoy spending a quality time with their children.

Mung beans are one of my favorite veggies, which are rich in vitamins and minerals. It can be used in many delicious dishes such as Pad Thai-Stir Fry Noodles, Spring Rolls, and Salads. These beans are the easiest and fastest to sprout and also good for beginners, but need a little more time. This lesson will teach your kids to enjoy the process of growing and watering the little bean sprouts from 3-5 days.

How To Grow Bean Sprouts Instructions:

  • First of all, you have to prepare mung beans and buy them online or in the health food stores. You can choose an organic brand.
  • Soak the beans for at least 8 hours or overnight in fresh and cool water in a bowl or a wide mouth mason jar at room temperature.
  • Drain and rinse the sprouts. Remove any damaged beans and foreign objects.
  • You can use a basket, a pot, or a mason jar what you have on hand. I used a pasta cooker or a steamer pot with lip.
  • Layer the pot with the paper towels. Spread bean seeds around the pot and cover them with the paper towels and lid. Watering the beans with fresh water at least twice a day from 4-5 days until they are ready to harvest.
  • Try to place a container in the shade or dark place. Find a spot away from sunlight.
  • If you are using a mason jar, drain the water out through the mesh cap. Give it a rinse with fresh water and drain again. Place it upside-down at an angle on a dish rack or wire cooling rack so the remaining moisture is released through the opening of the jar. Repeat the draining and rinsing process for 4-5 days until your sprouts are ready to eat!
  • Give your sprouts a final rinse and drain them well in a colander before refrigerating. Sort out any unsprouted beans. Place them in a container or a plastic bag lined with paper towel, seal, and refrigerate!
